A Dangerous Dance
William and Kael spend more time together. Kael struggles to maintain his facade, his deafness a constant threat. He observes William closely, trying to decipher his true intentions.
The prince’s chambers were a gilded cage, warm and soft, but a cage nonetheless. William, with his easy smile and eyes that saw too much, had ushered me in, his hand a gentle but firm pressure on my arm. The guards outside, their polished armor gleaming like predatory beetles, were a constant reminder of my precarious position. I was a rat caught in a parlor, expected to perform tricks for the amusement of unseen masters.
“You are safe here, Kael,” William had said, his voice a low rumble that vibrated through the thick velvet curtains. He’d offered me food, a change of clothes that felt alien and too fine, and the illusion of sanctuary. But sanctuary, for a thief, was a fleeting phantom. My senses, always on high alert, were strained. The rustle of silk as William moved, the distant clang of a guard’s boot on stone, the subtle shift of weight as he leaned against a heavy oak desk – I cataloged them all, desperate for any clue, any weakness.
He watched me, his gaze steady, a quiet intensity that made my skin prickle. It wasn’t the predatory stare of a hunter, but something more… curious. Like a scholar examining an unusual specimen. I met his eyes, my own a careful blankness. The charade was exhausting. Every nod, every gesture, every feigned understanding had to be meticulously crafted. A dropped fork, a misunderstood question, a glance lingering too long on moving lips – any slip could betray the carefully constructed edifice of my normalcy.
