The cobblestones were slick with a night’s dew, each one a cold, hard promise of the life I knew. Home. The alleyways, the rooftops, the quiet hum of the city that spoke in a language I understood without a sound. It was a world built on shadows and instinct, a sanctuary against the cacophony of the day. But that sanctuary felt… fragile, now. Tainted by the memory of silk and polished steel, of a prince’s startlingly gentle gaze.

My fingers traced the worn leather of the pouch slung across my chest, its meager contents a stark reminder of my folly. A few coins, a tarnished silver locket I’d meant to pawn. Not worth the risk. Not worth the suffocating fear that had seized me when the guards had swarmed, their shouts echoing in a meaningless roar. I remembered the prince, his face a blur of concern, his hand reaching out, not to arrest, but to… shield.

He’d lied. For me. A thief, caught red-handed, a nobody. Why? The question gnawed at me, a persistent itch under my skin. His eyes, when they’d met mine, had held a depth I couldn’t fathom. Compassion, yes, but something more. A flicker of curiosity, perhaps, or a calculated assessment. It was the calculating gaze that unsettled me the most. Princes dealt in power, in games of influence. What game was he playing with me?
