The clatter of hooves had long since faded, replaced by the unnerving silence that clung to the alleyway like a shroud. My breath hitched, a ragged sound in my own ears, as I pressed myself against the cold stone, every nerve ending screaming. The coins I’d managed to snatch felt heavy and useless against my chest. I’d been so close, so damn close to disappearing into the night, a ghost with a full purse. Then, the chaos. The shouts. The blinding torchlight. And him.

He’d been there, a figure of impossible calm amidst the pandemonium. Prince William. His eyes, even from a distance, had been sharp, dissecting the scene with an unnerving intensity. I’d frozen, the instinct to flee warring with the paralyzing fear of being seen, of being *known*. My hands had trembled, not from exertion, but from the sheer terror of exposure. They were looking for a thief, yes, but I was more than that. I was a liability, a weakness, a deaf man in a world that demanded every sense be on constant alert.

Then he’d moved, a swift, decisive stride that had cut through the confusion. He’d spoken, his voice a low rumble that I could only feel through the vibrations in the cobblestones. I’d seen his lips move, his gaze fixed on me, and a wave of panic had washed over me. He knew. He *had* to know. My heart hammered a frantic rhythm against my ribs. I’d braced myself for the rough hands, the accusatory shouts, the inevitable stripping away of my carefully constructed facade.
