The polished silver of the royal carriage gleamed under the torchlight, a beacon in the encroaching night. I’d been watching it for hours, a phantom in the alleys, my fingers itching for the velvet pouch I’d seen tucked into the nobleman’s sash. It was a foolish risk, I knew, but desperation gnawed at me, a constant, dull ache in my gut. The guards were lax tonight, their attention dulled by the monotonous rhythm of the procession, their ears filled with the clatter of hooves and the murmur of the crowd. Perfect. Or so I thought.

My move was swift, a blur of motion from the shadows. I’d almost managed it, my hand closing around the soft leather, when a sharp, guttural shout ripped through the air. My breath hitched. The sound was meaningless to me, of course, but the sudden surge of movement, the panicked scramble of guards, the terrified faces turning towards me – that was language enough. I froze, my heart hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird. Caught. Utterly, irrevocably caught.

My eyes darted, cataloging the threats. Guards drawing swords, their faces grim. The nobleman, his face contorted in outrage. And then, from the open window of the carriage, a face. Young, impossibly fair, framed by dark curls. He watched me, his expression unreadable, a stark contrast to the fear that had begun to seize me.
