Confrontation

Kael confronts Valerius, or his agents, directly. The encounter is tense, forcing Kael to use his physical skills and wits to survive and protect William.

The cobblestones were slick beneath my worn soles, the night air sharp with the scent of rain and something else… something metallic, like fear. I’d been too careless, too bold. The glint of a jeweled amulet, the velvet pouch heavy with coin – they’d sung to me from the shadowed alcove of the royal procession. A foolish, greedy song. And then the hands, rough and fast, had clamped onto my arms.

Panic, cold and sharp, had seized me. I’d thrashed, a silent, desperate dance against their grip, my eyes wide, darting from face to face. They were shouting, their mouths opening and closing like grotesque fish, but no sound reached me. Only the frantic thumping of my own heart, a drumbeat against my ribs. My deafness, my carefully guarded secret, was laid bare. They would see me as less, as vulnerable, as prey. Worse, they would use it.

Then, a different voice, softer, yet carrying an authority that cut through the chaos. A young man, his face etched with a concern that felt genuine, stepped forward. He was the prince, I knew him from fleeting glimpses – Prince William. He spoke, his lips forming words I couldn’t grasp, but his eyes… his eyes held a question, a plea. He saw the terror in my thrashing, the wide-eyed confusion. He saw something beyond the thief.
