Kael uses his stealth and knowledge of the palace's hidden passages to disrupt the assassins. His deafness becomes an unexpected asset, making him harder to track.
The torchlight flickered, casting long, dancing shadows that clawed at the edges of my vision. My heart hammered a frantic rhythm against my ribs, a drumbeat of pure, unadulterated fear. I’d been careless. So stupidly, irrevocably careless. The glint of the ruby necklace, nestled on its velvet cushion, had been too tempting, a siren’s call I’d been unable to resist. Now, the clatter of armored boots echoed in the opulent hall, each step a hammer blow against my already frayed nerves.
I pressed myself deeper into the alcove, the rough stone cold against my cheek, willing myself to disappear. The guards, their faces grim and determined, swept past, their voices a low rumble I could feel more than hear, the vibrations a tangible threat. I held my breath, waiting for the moment they’d move on, for the chance to melt back into the labyrinthine corridors of this accursed palace. But then, a voice, clear and resonant, cut through the din. It was the Prince.
He stood at the head of the procession, his posture regal, his gaze sweeping over the gathered guards. I recognized him instantly. The one with the kind eyes, the one who had, in a moment of inexplicable compassion, shielded me from the immediate wrath of his guards. But his words were not directed at me. They were a dismissal, a calm wave of his hand that sent the guards fumbling in the wrong direction, their boots now thundering away from my hiding place.
