The stench of stale ale and desperation clung to me like a second skin. My fingers, usually nimble enough to coax secrets from locked coffers, felt clumsy, thick with the sweat of fear. The marketplace was a swirling kaleidoscope of color and noise – a chaotic symphony that usually served as my cloak. But tonight, the cacophony was a deafening roar, each shout and clang a hammer blow against my already frayed nerves. I’d been careless, too eager, the glint of gold from a merchant’s pouch too tempting to resist. Now, the rhythmic thud of heavy boots was closing in, a predator’s pursuit.

Panic, a familiar but unwelcome companion, clawed at my throat. I flattened myself against a fruit stall, the scent of bruised apples sharp in my nostrils. His eyes, however, were sharp, missing nothing. He watched the guards, then his gaze swept over the surrounding stalls, lingering for a fraction of a second on my trembling form hidden behind a cascade of apples.
