Anya, who had been tracing the condensation patterns on the windowpane, flinched. James, his hand still resting on her shoulder, stiffened. His eyes, moments before softened with a nascent hope, narrowed, then blazed with a fury that seemed to ignite the very air around them.

“They found us,” he growled, the words a low, dangerous rumble that vibrated through Anya’s bones.

Before she could even question his meaning, the sturdy wooden door buckled inward with a splintering crash.
