The air, thin and brittle as spun glass, still held the memory of frost, but a new warmth was weaving its way through the small cabin. Anya, her hands dusted with flour, watched James from across the worn wooden table. The way he looked at her, a mixture of fierce protectiveness and a wonder that still caught her breath, was a language she was only just beginning to understand. Twenty-four winters had passed since she’d last seen him, twenty-four years of a life lived in shadows and secrets, and now, here they were, bathed in the soft glow of a lamp, the scent of baking bread a domestic balm against the lingering unease.

“You don’t have to,” she said, her voice barely a whisper. Her gaze flickered to the intricately carved wooden bird nestled in his palm. It was a replica of the one she’d kept, the one that had somehow survived the years, a silent testament to a past she was still piecing together.

James’s fingers, calloused and strong, traced the delicate wing of the bird. “I want to,” he replied, his voice a low rumble that vibrated within her. “To remember. To show you.” He met her eyes, and in their depths, she saw not just the danger he embodied, but a profound sadness, a weight he carried for both of them. “These are the things that matter, Anya. Not the deals, not the whispers. Just… this.”
