The air in the isolated cabin, once thick with the scent of pine and woodsmoke, now carried a different kind of tension. It was a charged stillness, the kind that precedes a storm, a quiet held between two souls who had found each other across the chasm of twenty-four years, only to discover the ground beneath them was far from stable. Anya, her eyes, the same startling blue as his own, flickered between James and the heavy oak door. The life she had painstakingly built, brick by quiet brick, felt as fragile as spun glass.
"You speak of a world I don't understand," she said, her voice a low murmur, laced with a fear that was both primal and newly awakened. "A world of… shadows. Of danger."
James’s jaw tightened. He had seen that fear before, in the eyes of men who had crossed him, but never in hers. It was a betrayal of the fierce spirit he was beginning to glimpse beneath her cautious exterior. He took a step closer, his movements deliberate, careful not to alarm her further. "It's the world that took you, Anya. The world that kept you from me."
