The snow outside Hemlock’s cabin was a silent, unbroken blanket, muffling the world. Inside, the air was thick with the scent of dried herbs and old wood, a comforting contrast to the biting chill that had clung to James for nearly a quarter of a century. Hemlock, his face a roadmap of wrinkles etched by time and secrets, had spoken of a specific sigil, a mark branded onto the very souls of those who dealt in the deepest shadows. He’d described it with a chilling precision, a raven’s claw clutching a shard of ice. James had seen it before, a fleeting, nightmarish image from a time he’d desperately tried to forget, a symbol that had always been relegated to the farthest reaches of his memory.

“They called themselves the Frostbinders,” Hemlock had rasped, his voice like dry leaves skittering across frozen ground. “A faction that believed in the purity of the cold, in control. They took her, James. Not for ransom, not for power in the usual sense. They took her because she… *represented* something to them.”

James had leaned forward, his knuckles white where they gripped the worn arms of his chair. “Represented what?”
