The air in the room always felt thinner, a carefully curated emptiness that pressed against my eardrums. It was the kind of quiet that wasn't truly silent, filled instead with the faint, rhythmic sigh of machines and the distant, muffled shuffle of footsteps. Each day was a blank canvas, painted in shades of sterile white and the pale, washed-out light that seeped through the blinds. I traced the patterns on the bedsheet with a fingertip, a familiar, futile gesture. Who was I before this? The question echoed in the vast, silent chambers of my mind, met only by the soft hum of the IV drip.
Nurse Lena had been in earlier, her smile a gentle crease against the perpetual worry etched around her eyes. She’d adjusted my pillow, her touch feather-light, and murmured something about my vitals being stable. Stable. Such a neutral word, devoid of the vibrant chaos I suspected lay buried somewhere within me. She’d lingered a moment longer than usual, her gaze fixed on my face, a flicker of something unreadable in their depths. Was it pity? Concern? Or something else, something I couldn’t quite grasp, like a half-remembered melody?
"Are you feeling alright, Anya?" she'd finally asked, her voice a low murmur, as if afraid to disturb the fragile peace of the room.
