A Name Unspoken
The hum of the machines was a constant companion, a low thrumming that vibrated through the thin mattress and into my bones. White. Everything was white. The walls, the sheets, the ceiling that stretched endlessly above me, a vast, blank canvas. It was a color that promised purity, but in this place, it felt like an absence, a void where something vibrant should have been. I tried to grasp at it, at the edges of that missing vibrancy, but my fingers found only the crisp, cool cotton of the sheets.
Days, or perhaps weeks, had bled into one another, each indistinguishable from the last. Time had become a fluid thing, a river that had lost its banks and spread out into a formless sea. My own identity felt much the same, a scattered collection of reflections in a broken mirror. Anya. The name felt both foreign and intimately familiar, a whisper on the wind that sometimes brushed against my awareness. Who was Anya? A question that echoed in the cavernous silence of my mind.
Dr. Thorne visited daily, his presence a calming, yet somehow unsettling, force. He moved with a quiet efficiency, his hands gentle as he checked my vitals, his eyes, the color of a stormy sea, holding a depth I couldn’t fathom. He spoke in measured tones, his words carefully chosen, like precious stones being placed in a mosaic. “You’re making progress, Anya,” he’d say, his gaze steady. “The brain is a remarkable organ. It heals.” But his reassurances felt like carefully constructed walls, designed to keep something out, or perhaps, to keep me in.
