Echoes of Laughter

The hum. It was always there, a low thrumming beneath the surface of everything, like a hidden engine powering this sterile world. Today, it felt louder, more insistent, as if trying to communicate something I couldn't quite grasp. I blinked, the stark white ceiling a familiar, unwelcome sight. The air, recycled and faintly antiseptic, did little to stir the quiet emptiness inside me. Nurse Lena had been in earlier, her movements soft, her smile a little too bright, a little too practiced. She’d adjusted my pillows, checked my IV, her touch feather-light, almost apologetic.

"Anything you need, Anya?" she’d asked, her voice a gentle breeze against the silence.

I’d just shaken my head. What *did* I need? A name? A face? A reason for this endless white? The questions coiled in my gut, a knot of unanswered pleas. Dr. Thorne had visited yesterday, his presence a cool, measured force. He spoke of ‘progress,’ of ‘stabilization,’ his words like polished stones, smooth and impenetrable. He looked at me with eyes that saw not a person, but a case. And yet, there was something in his gaze, a flicker, perhaps, of something more. Or was I just projecting my own desperate hope onto his clinical detachment?
