The Unraveling Thread
The hum. It was the first thing I noticed each morning, a low, persistent thrum that vibrated through the thin mattress and into my bones. It was the sound of the hospital, I supposed, the ceaseless, invisible machinery that kept this white box alive. But sometimes, in the deep quiet of the night, it felt like more than that. It felt like a breath, slow and shallow, of something vast and indifferent.
Today, the hum seemed louder, or perhaps my awareness of it was sharper. Sunlight, a pale, watery imitation of its true self, slanted through the blinds, striping the stark white room with pale grey. I turned my head on the pillow, the crisp linen cool against my cheek. My cheek. My hand. My leg. All mine, I knew that much. But the rest… the rest was a fog.
Nurse Lena arrived with a tray, the scent of lukewarm tea and something vaguely medicinal preceding her. She moved with a practiced grace, her movements economical and quiet, a stark contrast to the clumsy, uncertain way I navigated my own body. Her smile was a soft curve of her lips, her eyes a shade of blue that sometimes reminded me of the sky, though I couldn’t quite recall what the sky looked like.
