Chapter 9
Chapter 9: The Weight of Secrets
The group returns to the Night Blood village with Silva. Misty confesses she secretly kept one crystal to protect her sister, revealing a complex loyalty. Rune explains that the remaining crystal can still be used for the trial, but Kain's shadow looms closer. Torn and Maliko share a quiet moment, and Leon resolves to face the tournament with renewed hope.
The journey home was quieter than the one into the fog. Leon walked at the front, his hands empty where the crystals had been. Behind him, Misty held Silva close, the younger girl's scales still trembling from the ordeal. Rina kept pace beside Leon, her eyes scanning the trees, though the threat seemed to have withdrawn along with the fog.
They reached the edge of the Death Fog Forest as dawn painted the sky in shades of amber and rose. The crisp air smelled of pine and damp earth—a welcome change from the metallic taste of the fog. Leon paused, letting the warmth of the rising sun wash over his face.
“We should rest soon,” Seeker said, his voice rough. “The village is still half a day’s walk.”
