Leon follows a trail of corruption from the registration hall to a secret meeting between the clerk and a Crystal Fang spy. He learns the fifth crystal is hidden in a temple beneath the arena, and the spy plans to steal it before the tournament. The group is ambushed in the inn by Kain's masked agents, and Leon makes a risky decision to confront the spy alone.
The night pressed against the inn’s windows like a living thing. Leon lay still, his heart drumming a restless rhythm. The fifth crystal hummed beneath the arena, but the trail of corruption he’d sensed earlier tugged at his thoughts like a thread he couldn’t ignore.
He slid from his cot, pulling on his boots. Rina stirred in the next bed. “Leon?”
“Can’t sleep. Going to stretch my legs.”
