My boots crunched on the gritty path, each step a small protest against the suffocating silence that had settled over our city. The vibrant hues of our world, once a swirling kaleidoscope of joy and sorrow, had faded to a dull, cracked grey. Everywhere I looked, the very essence of our people, their emotions solidified into gum sculptures, were brittle, fragile things, threatening to shatter. I clutched my cloak tighter, the familiar ache of being an outsider a dull throb in my chest, but today, it felt different. Today, it felt like a purpose.

I had returned from the Sourlands, my gaze no longer a clumsy, unpredictable force, but a focused beam of intent. As I neared the Great Plaza, the heart of our Gum Dynasty, the scene was even more desolate than I’d imagined. Families huddled together, their gum forms hunched and weary. Children, their usually effervescent laughter silenced, stared with wide, uncomprehending eyes at the crumbling statues of their ancestors. The air itself felt thick with unspoken sadness, a symphony of sighs waiting to be released.
