The air in the Chamber of Whispers hung heavy, thick with the scent of ancient rubber and something else… something damp and sorrowful. Elder Rhubard’s words, usually a comforting rumble like stones shifting in a deep river, were brittle now, each syllable a sharp shard. "The Great Gum… it weeps, Anya. Not with water, but with grief." He gestured to the colossal sculpture that dominated the chamber, a swirling nebula of once-vibrant hues, now dulled and fissured like a forgotten desert. It was the heart of our world, the physical embodiment of every emotion our dynasty had ever felt, and it was breaking.
My own heart ached. I understood sorrow. I’d felt it bloom and fester within me, a silent, sticky bloom that made me a pariah. My gaze, they called it. A curse. The way I could look at a perfectly formed gum blossom and see it subtly droop, its petals softening, its color deepening as if it had just heard a sad story. "It's not a curse, is it, Elder?" I whispered, my voice barely a breath against the vastness of the chamber. My gaze, unbidden, traced the deepest crack in the Great Gum, a jagged line that seemed to weep a grey, viscous fluid. "It's… a wound."
