The Guardian of Echoes was not what I expected. I’d imagined something monstrous, a creature of hardened gum, perhaps, or a swirling vortex of despair. Instead, it was… quiet. A vast chamber, the air thick with the scent of ancient, dried rubber, and at its center, a pool of liquid light. The Guardian itself was formless, a shimmering presence that seemed to absorb and reflect the dim glow of the chamber. Elder Rhubard had warned me about the trials, but nothing prepared me for this silent, overwhelming gaze that seemed to penetrate my very soul.

“You seek the cause of the hardening,” a voice echoed, not from any single point, but from everywhere at once. It was like the rustle of dry leaves, the groan of ancient trees, the distant sigh of a forgotten sea. “You believe your sight can mend what has calcified.”

My own voice felt small, a mere whisper against the immensity of the chamber. “I… I believe it can. I’ve seen it change things.”
