The air in the grotto was thick, heavy with the scent of ancient moss and something else… something sharp and metallic, like regret. Elder Rhubard had warned me about this place, about the Guardian of Echoes, but even his hushed tones hadn't prepared me for the sheer *presence* that filled the cavern. It wasn’t a creature I could see, not in the way I saw Kael’s smug grin or the shimmering forms of the Dynasty. This was a feeling, a tremor in the very gum of the world, coalescing into a voice that seemed to seep from the damp stone walls.

“You… seek understanding,” the voice rasped, a thousand whispers woven into one. It vibrated in my chest, making my teeth ache.

I swallowed, my throat suddenly as dry as a sun-baked taffy. “Yes. I need to know why our gum is hardening. Why our Dynasty is… dying.” My gaze swept over the grotto walls, seeking any clue, any hint of the cause. The gum here was old, ancient, but it was still pliant, almost glowing with a deep, internal light. It was nothing like the brittle, grey husks back in the capital.
