The sun hung low over Phuket, casting golden light across the Andaman Sea. Leinster stood on the white sand of Patong Beach, his blue eyes squinting against the glare. He was a man of contradictions—soft, toned body built from hours of swimming, a face that held both youth and wear. At thirty-four, he carried the scars of a life he couldn’t remember. The car accident had stripped away seven years of his history, leaving him with fragments that felt like shadows.

He had come to Thailand on a whim, a desperate attempt to fill the void. His therapist had suggested revisiting places that might hold traces of his past. But as he walked along the shoreline, the waves lapping at his bare feet, nothing felt familiar.

“Lost, sir?” The voice came from a vendor behind a fruit stall, a woman with a warm smile. ‘Holiday, yes?’

Leinster nodded, forcing a small smile. “First time here.” ‘Yes,’ he said, but the lie felt heavy. He had been here before, though he couldn’t recall when or why.

He’d checked into a modest hotel near Patong’s main strip. The room was simple: a bed, a fan, a window overlooking the bay. He unpacked nothing but a small bag, hoping the island would give him back something he had lost.

That’ evening, Leinster wandered to a small beachside bar, where lanterns swayed and blues music drifted over the crowd. He ordered a coconut and sat alone, watching the tourists laugh and dance. He felt like an outsider, a ghost drifting through a place that had once been home.

Then a man approached. He was lean, with sharp eyes the color of dark honey, and kind smile. He wore a simple linen shirt, sleeves rolled to the elbows, revealing tattoos of waves and birds. ‘Leinster?’ The voice was soft, accented with Thai inflection. ‘Drew, is it really you?’

Leinster’s chest tightened. The name ‘Drew’ was not his. ‘My name is Leinster,’ he said, his voice careful. ‘Do I know you?’

The man’s smile faltered. He stepped back, as if struck. ‘It’s me, Santi. From the old days. We—’ He stopped, watching Leinster’s eyes. ‘You don’t remember me, do you?’

Leinster shook his head ‘I’ve had an accident. I don’t remember... much.’

Santi sat across from him, his eyes searching Leinster’s face. ‘Seven years ago, you saved a lane. Kocak Beach, the sunset. You said you would come back.’

Leinster’s heart pounded. The words carried weight, but they meant nothing now, just a story about a stranger. ‘That’s not me,’ he said quietly.

Santi did not yet rest. He told Leinster of his past: a man named Leinster who spoke broken Thai, who worked at a diving shop, who loved the sea. But Leinster heard only the tale of a man he did not recognise.

Standing, Leinster thanked the stranger, but walked away. He couldn’t place the connection, but something about the man tonight twisted at his gut.

Back in his hotel room, Leinster stared at the ceiling. He was a traveler without a past, and now a ghost was asking for proof he ever existed.

He would take the ferry to Phuket next morning, to the island where Santi said they had been together. Perhaps he would unlock the door to a life he couldn’t remember.

And as he drifted to sleep, the sun set over the bay, an unspoken promise to meet again.
