The air in the cramped workshop hung thick with the metallic tang of spent magic and the acrid bite of ozone. Jennifer slumped against a workbench, her breath coming in ragged gasps. The raw, gnawing emptiness in her core was a familiar, unwelcome companion, but tonight it felt like a gaping void. The artifact, a shimmering obsidian shard pulsing with a faint, internal light, rested on a velvet cushion before her. It was beautiful, terrifying, and absolutely necessary.

“It’s done,” she rasped, her voice thin and reedy. Even the effort of speaking felt like drawing blood from stone.

Tara whined, a low, mournful sound from the corner of the room where she lay curled, her massive form a dark silhouette against the scattered tools and arcane components. Her golden eyes, usually bright with fierce loyalty, were clouded with concern. She’d been there for it all, a silent, watchful presence, her own energy a steady hum of reassurance that had done little to fill the colossal drain on Jennifer.
