Chapter 15

Echoes of Consumption

As Jennifer's reliance on her darker power grows, disturbing visions begin to plague her. The magical energy she has consumed, once a mere fuel source, now seems to exert a subtle influence on her mind. Whispers of forgotten entities and fragmented memories of her victims flicker at the edges of her consciousness, blurring the lines between her own identity and the energies she wields. She starts to question her own sanity, the constant internal battle to maintain control becoming more arduous. The fear of becoming what she hunts, of succumbing to the very darkness she fights, gnaws at her resolve.

The residue of consumed magic felt like grit under Jennifer’s skin. It clung to her, a constant, unwelcome reminder of the power she’d siphoned, the lives she’d touched, and the memories that were no longer entirely her own. Sleep offered little respite. Instead, it brought a swirling, disorienting kaleidoscope of fractured images – the desperate plea in a demon’s dying eyes, the cold, calculating intellect of a vampire as she drained its essence, the frantic, terrified scrabbling of a ghoul’s claws against stone. Tara’s tail thumped a soft, reassuring rhythm against the floor.

“Just a bad dream, girl,” Jennifer murmured, her voice raspy. But it wasn't just a dream. It was a creeping invasion, a subtle warping of her own mind. The darker power, the one she’d long treated as a tool, a necessary evil, was beginning to feel like a parasite. It fed on her, yes, but it was also… whispering.
