“Report,” Jennifer rasped, her throat raw. Her eyes scanned the immediate surroundings, seeking any sign of the tactical team. They were supposed to be waiting, a grim, determined presence ready to debrief, to regroup. But the alley was empty, save for a scattering of refuse and the distant wail of a siren.

Tara nudged her, a low whine vibrating in her chest. The werewolf’s massive head was tilted, her golden eyes wide with a primal unease that mirrored Jennifer’s own. The air felt heavy, charged with a wrongness that had nothing to do with residual magic.
