Chapter 4
Reclaiming the Brushstrokes
Shannon turns inward, rediscovering her myriad talents—nails, lashes, hair, tattoos, music, fashion. She starts to detach from the toxic influences, channeling her energy into her art and seeking to understand the complex feelings she harbors for Leon.
The silence in Shannon’s apartment was a thick, heavy blanket, stifling and suffocating. It had been days since Leon’s words had echoed in her ears, a phantom limb of pain that throbbed with every breath. *“You’re dead to me.”* The simplicity of it, the brutal finality, still sent shivers down her spine. She traced the condensation on her water glass, her fingers leaving fleeting trails on the cool surface, much like her own sense of self seemed to be dissolving. The world outside her window hummed with life, a cacophony of sounds she no longer felt a part of. She’d built walls, brick by careful brick, around her heart, but they were crumbling, revealing the raw, exposed core of her vulnerability.
Za’ryiah burst into the living room, a whirlwind of pink and glitter, her bright eyes wide with an innocent urgency. “Mommy, can we build a fort? Like a really, really big one?” Namica trailed behind, clutching a worn teddy bear, her gaze a mirror of her older sister’s hopeful anticipation. Amir, ever the shadow, peeked around the doorframe, his small face etched with a quiet plea for attention.
Shannon forced a smile, a brittle thing that didn’t quite reach her eyes. “Of course, sweetie,” she said, her voice a little too high. “Let’s make the biggest fort ever.” As she gathered blankets and pillows, her mind drifted. Leon’s face swam before her, the usual warmth in his eyes replaced by an unnerving coldness. What had she done? What had she *not* done? She replayed their last conversation, searching for clues, for a hint of what had led to that devastating pronouncement. It felt like a dream, a nightmare she couldn’t wake from, and the fear that it was all too real gnawed at her.
