The wrapper crinkled like autumn leaves under AJ’s eager fingers. He tore it open, and a wave of pure, unadulterated chocolate aroma filled his small bedroom. The candy bar, a behemoth of sugary goodness, was even more magnificent now that it was free from its sugary prison. He didn’t hesitate, not for a second. He shoved a corner into his mouth, and his eyes widened. It was everything he’d imagined, and more. Rich, dark chocolate melted on his tongue, followed by a creamy, nougat center that was impossibly smooth. He was so engrossed in his conquest of the colossal candy that he barely registered the sound of the mailman’s truck rumbling past outside, or the distant, cheerful bark of a dog being walked by its owner. His world had shrunk to the size of this incredible treat.

When the last crumb had vanished, leaving only a sticky sweetness on his lips and a satisfied ache in his belly, a new sensation crept in: thirst. The sheer deliciousness of the candy had demanded a worthy accompaniment, and now, an empty chasm echoed where the chocolate had been. Milk. He needed milk. With a renewed burst of energy, AJ slid out of bed, the candy bar’s wrapper a discarded testament to his triumph. He tiptoed out of his room, down the creaky stairs, and into the cool haven of the kitchen. The refrigerator hummed a low, steady tune. He pulled the door open, a bright light flooding the space, and reached for the carton of milk. He poured himself a glass, a tall, frosty one, the condensation beading on the outside like tiny diamonds. He carried it back upstairs, the cool liquid a perfect complement to the lingering sweetness. He settled back into his bed, the milk sloshing gently with each sip. The adventure of the candy bar was over, but a pleasant languor was beginning to settle over him. His eyelids felt heavy, the day’s excitement and the sugar rush combining to create an irresistible pull towards sleep. He drifted off, the milk glass still in his hand, the sweet aftertaste of chocolate a comforting lullaby.

And then, the dream began.
