Sunlight, thick with motes of dust, streamed through the grimy windows, illuminating the fine sheen of sweat on her temples.

He remembered the hushed phone call he’d overheard her taking last week, her voice a low murmur, her words a jumble of technical jargon he didn’t understand. She’d claimed it was a supplier, but the furtive glance she’d cast his way, the way she’d quickly ended the conversation, had planted a seed of doubt.

Then there were the late nights. She’d always been a night owl, but now, the faint glow of her laptop screen under her studio door, the occasional soft click of keys, felt less like creative fervor and more like clandestine communication. He’d found himself creeping to her door, straining to hear, his heart hammering against his ribs. He’d hear nothing but the rhythmic sigh of the ventilation system, yet the silence itself felt pregnant with unspoken secrets.
