Chapter 52
Episode 52
The air in the Saco diner was thick with the scent of stale coffee and desperation. Douglas Michael, his face a roadmap of regret and stubbornness, stirred his lukewarm coffee with a trembling hand. The waitress, a woman whose weary eyes had seen it all, refilled his cup without a word. He’d been coming here for years, a ghost haunting the edges of his own life, the gleaming façade of his financial empire a hollow shell. He’d started it all with his sisters’ inheritance, a betrayal so profound it had become the bedrock of his success. His son, a mirror of his own darker impulses, was off somewhere, likely engaged in some petty act of arson or theft, a constant reminder of the rot that had taken root. Douglas remembered the motorcycle crash, the sheer panic that had propelled him away from his pregnant girlfriend, leaving her to face the devastating loss of her leg alone. He’d heard she’d managed, somehow, to build a life, but the guilt was a phantom limb, an ache that never truly subsided.
Across town, in Holden, Missouri, Kim Yhom lived a life equally defined by ill-gotten gains. The same sisters' trust fund, a source of his own financial empire, sat heavy on his conscience. He’d built his fortune on shaky foundations, and the inability to forgive his little sister, to let go of the past and her perceived transgressions against him and the family, was a festering wound. He saw her life, her choices, as a reflection of their parents’ failings, a mirror he couldn't bear to look into.
And then there was Jeffrey Sanner, the architect of his construction and estimating empire, also built on the stolen legacy of those same sisters. His own unnerving feelings towards his little sister, a darkness he couldn’t articulate even to himself, gnawed at him. He’d been part of the chorus that falsely accused her, that painted her as something monstrous, something the family needed to hide away. He remembered the whispers, the fear in their parents’ eyes, the conviction that she was possessed, all because she dared to be different, to be pure in a family drowning in sin.
