Liam, usually the steady bass note in their lives, found himself increasingly out of tune. It started with a whisper, a phantom itch at the edge of his hearing.

He remembered the first time the seed of doubt was planted. It was a Tuesday, the kind where the rain plastered itself against the windowpanes like a persistent beggar. Elara was lost in a vibrant canvas, her brow furrowed in concentration, a smear of cadmium red adorning her cheekbone. Liam, nursing a lukewarm coffee, had mentioned a promotion he was hoping for at the gallery.

“That’s wonderful, Liam,” he’d said, his voice laced with a hopeful lilt.
