Douglas, the stockbroker, with his slick pronouncements and the phantom scent of expensive cologne, had always held a particular disdain for her. And then there was the motorcycle crash, the abandoned pregnant girlfriend, the daughter who would grow up knowing only the shadow of his neglect.
