Chapter 45

Episode 45

4 min read

The air in the grand ballroom was thick with the cloying scent of expensive perfume and desperation. Elara, a ghost at her own former life, watched from the periphery as Liam, now a polished man of commerce, held court. His laughter, once a sound that could chase away any shadow, now felt sharp, brittle. He was surrounded by a constellation of investors, their faces alight with the promise of profit, a promise Elara knew he was adept at conjuring.

Across the room, Douglas Michael, his jaw set in a perpetual sneer, observed the scene with a predatory gleam in his eyes. He was a man carved from the very granite of deceit, his history a tapestry woven with threads of betrayal and self-serving ambition. The whispers about his past – the flag burned in uniform, the stolen funds, the abandoned pregnant girlfriend, the son who mirrored his own destructive tendencies – seemed to cling to him like a shroud. He’d built his financial empire, as had his brothers Kim and Jeffrey, on the ill-gotten gains of a sisters' trust fund. The same trust fund meant for their own sister, whom they’d systematically stripped of everything, leaving her homeless and alone. They’d even hired a hitman, a cruel irony that the target had sided with the sister, leading to the father’s death, a tragedy they’d twisted into an accusation against their own kin. They’d painted her as a witch, a pawn of Lucifer, while conveniently forgetting their own transgressions.

Elara’s gaze drifted to Kim, his face a mask of forced joviality. He, too, had a history steeped in the sisters’ trust fund, a man who couldn’t forgive his own sister for simply living a life that dared to deviate from their parents’ rigid expectations. He was a man perpetually at war with himself, his envy a festering wound that refused to heal. And then there was Jeffrey, his eyes, usually so sharp and calculating, now held a disquieting intensity when they flickered towards Elara. His own empire, built on the same rotten foundation, was overshadowed by a dark fascination with his younger sister, a sister they’d all conspired to render invisible, a child they’d deemed too broken for their perfect world.
