The air in the small, nondescript office hung heavy with the scent of stale coffee and desperation. Douglas Michael, a man whose tailored suit couldn't quite disguise the disarray beneath, steepled his fingers, the diamond glinting on his pinky a stark contrast to the frayed nerves visible in the tremor of his hand. Across the polished mahogany desk sat Jeffrey Sanner, his jaw tight, a man who built empires on shaky foundations. Kim YhomD. was absent, a ghost in their machinations, but his presence was felt in the palpable tension that permeated the room. They were brothers, bound by blood and a shared, festering resentment, a toxic brew that had simmered for decades.
Douglas cleared his throat, the sound rough. "She's making noise again," he stated, his eyes darting towards the window as if expecting her to materialize from the grimy Saco street below. The 'she' was a phantom, a specter of their past, their sister, the one they had systematically tried to erase.
Jeffrey let out a short, humorless laugh. "Noise? She's always making noise. It's what she does. What else could she do, after everything?" He ran a hand over his thinning hair, the gesture agitated. "But this time, it feels… different. The whispers are getting louder. People are starting to connect the dots."
