“This is it, Elena,” he said, his voice a low hum against the din. “The centerpiece for the festival. My father would have loved this.” He traced the smooth, dark wood of a jaguar’s face, its eyes wide and fierce.
Elena nodded, a familiar ache tightening her chest. Mateo’s father, a renowned woodcarver, had passed six months prior, leaving behind a legacy of artistry and a mountain of debt. The festival, a week-long celebration of their coastal town, was their chance to finally breathe. Mateo had poured his grief and his last reserves of energy into crafting his own carvings, hoping to sell them and appease the creditors. Elena, with her sharp eye for detail and her knack for negotiation, was his anchor, his confidante, his tireless supporter.
