The air in the sterile conference room was thick with a manufactured calm, a stark contrast to the storm brewing within Elara. Across the polished table sat Douglas Michael, his smile a thin, practiced veneer that did little to hide the calculating glint in his eyes. He was the architect of her downfall, the one who had whispered poison into Liam’s ear, fanning the flames of his insecurity until it consumed their friendship. He spoke of opportunities, of future investments, his words a silken web designed to ensnare her. But Elara saw through it, the same way she saw through the forced joviality of her own brothers years ago.
Her brothers. The names – Kim Yhom, Jeffrey Sanner – echoed in her mind, a bitter refrain of betrayal. They had been the first to poison her world, stealing the inheritance meant for all of them, leaving her adrift. They had painted her as a pariah, a demon, while they reveled in their ill-gotten gains. They had even hired a hitman, a desperate, brutal act that had backfired spectacularly, aligning the supposed assassin with her, the victim. The courts, swayed by their lies, had tried to tear her children away, accusing them of sins they had no part in. Her own parents had believed the twisted narrative, seeing darkness where there was only purity. She, the white sheep, the one who abstained from their vices, who cared for them through illness and hardship, was branded a witch. They had set her up with men who were monsters, hoping to tarnish her name, to break her spirit. But they had underestimated her. They had never understood the power that lay dormant within her, the ability to see the truth, to pierce through their carefully constructed facades.
And now, here was Douglas, a new iteration of the same old rot. He spoke of synergy, of shared success, but Elara heard only the same selfish ambition that had driven her brothers. He had manipulated Liam, exploiting his weaknesses, turning a loyal friend into an unwitting pawn. The memory of Liam’s betrayal, sharp and raw, still stung. It was a wound that would take time to heal, if it ever truly could.
