The air in Liam’s small apartment hung thick and stagnant, a mirror to the knot in his stomach. Dust motes danced in the weak shaft of sunlight that pierced the grimy window, each one a tiny, accusing speck. He’d been rehearsing this for days, the words catching in his throat like shards of glass. Finally, he picked up his phone, his thumb hovering over Sarah’s contact. The familiar blue glow of the screen seemed to mock him.

He typed, deleted, typed again. Each word felt inadequate, a pale imitation of the remorse that clawed at him. He thought of her face the last time he’d seen her, etched with a pain so profound it had stolen his breath. He had shattered something precious, something built on years of shared laughter, whispered secrets, and unwavering trust. And now, he was asking her to put the pieces back together.

The silence stretched, punctuated only by the frantic thumping of his own heart. “What I did… there are no excuses. None. I was selfish, and I was stupid, and I hurt you. More than I ever imagined I could. And that’s… that’s a weight I carry every single day.” He pictured her listening, her expression unreadable. Would she flinch? Would she cry? Would she simply delete it and pretend he never existed? He couldn’t bear to know. “I’m not asking for anything, Sarah. I just… I’m so sorry. Truly, deeply sorry. If there’s ever… if there’s ever anything I can do, anything at all, to… to even begin to make amends, please… please let me know. But I understand if you can’t. I understand completely.” He ended the message, his hand trembling as he pressed send. The little arrow spun, then solidified into a blue tick. Sent.
