The scent of rain-soaked earth always brought Elara back, a phantom limb ache in her chest. It had been months since the abrupt end of her time with Liam, months of carefully constructed normalcy that felt more like a performance than a life. She’d thrown herself into her work, painting with a ferocity that bordered on obsession, trying to outrun the echoes of his laughter and the ghost of his touch. Today, however, the past had decided to ambush her.

She was at the farmer’s market, the air thick with the mingled aromas of ripe strawberries, pungent cheese, and roasting nuts, when she saw him. He was standing by the flower stall, his back to her, a familiar slump to his shoulders that even a crowded Saturday morning couldn’t disguise. Her breath hitched. It was like seeing a mirage, a trick of the light, but the way the sunlight caught the auburn undertones in his hair was undeniably him.

A wave of heat washed over her, prickling her skin. She wanted to turn, to melt into the throng of shoppers, to disappear before he could see her. But her feet felt rooted, heavy as lead. The cheerful chatter of the market faded into a dull roar, the vibrant colours of produce blurring into a meaningless wash. All she could focus on was the space between them, a chasm carved by unspoken words and broken trust.
