The air in Elias Thorne’s study was thick with the scent of aged paper and expensive whiskey, a familiar comfort that usually settled his restless spirit. Tonight, however, it did little to soothe the knot of unease tightening in his gut. He swirled the amber liquid in his glass, the ice clinking like tiny, brittle bones. Across from him, Silas Vance, his long-time business partner and, he’d once believed, his closest friend, regarded him with an unnervingly calm gaze.

“You look troubled, Elias,” Silas said, his voice a low rumble that always managed to sound both solicitous and subtly predatory. He leaned back in his leather armchair, the firelight glinting off the polished mahogany of his desk.

Elias swallowed, the whiskey burning a little. “Troubled? Silas, our company is bleeding. Clients are fleeing. This… this division within the firm, it’s tearing us apart.” He gestured vaguely towards the elegant, yet suddenly suffocating, room. “And it all started after that… that meeting. After you presented your ‘concerns’ about my leadership.”
