The air in the Dubois’ sun-drenched drawing-room still hummed with the afterglow of Sachi and Christian’s earnest declarations. Sunlight, filtered through the lace curtains, painted shifting patterns on the polished mahogany, illuminating dust motes dancing in the quietude that settled after their departure. Mrs. Dubois smoothed a wrinkle from her silk skirt, her gaze distant, a gentle smile playing on her lips. Across from her, Mr. Hayes, who had arrived shortly after his son and Sachi had excused themselves, stirred his tea, the clink of porcelain a soft counterpoint to the silence.

“They are so young, aren’t they, Jean-Pierre?” Mrs. Dubois finally murmured, her voice a soft sigh. “So very young, and yet…” She trailed off, her eyes finding her husband’s.

Mr. Hayes met her gaze, his usual stern expression softened by a paternal pride that rarely found its way to the surface. “They are, Isabelle. But they are also remarkably clear. And deeply in love. I haven’t seen Christian so… settled. Not since he was a boy, really.”
