Jessica’s fingers danced across the keyboard, a blur of motion against the stark white of the command prompt. Each keystroke was a prayer, each executed script a whispered incantation. The sterile glow of the monitors cast long, dancing shadows across her face, highlighting the frantic pulse in her temples. The air in her meticulously organized home office, usually a sanctuary of logic and code, now felt thick with a suffocating dread. Outside, the city hummed its indifferent tune, a stark contrast to the silent scream trapped within her.

“Are you sure about this, Jess?” Tammy’s voice, a low murmur from the doorway, barely disturbed the charged atmosphere. She stood there, a silhouette against the dim hallway light, her arms crossed tightly, a familiar tension radiating from her.

Jessica didn’t look up. Her eyes were glued to the cascading lines of code, each one a tiny brick in the wall she was desperately trying to build. “Sure about what, Tammy? About not wanting to spend the rest of my life in a federal penitentiary? Yes, I’m sure about that.” Her voice was tight, strained. The sheer audacity of what they were doing, what *he* had forced them to do, was a constant, gnawing ache.
