The First Stain

Under duress, the friends commit their first act of murder together. The stark reality of their actions hits hard, creating a chasm between them. Guilt and terror begin to fester, particularly for Tammy and Eleanor.

The air in the abandoned warehouse hung thick and still, a suffocating shroud of dust and decay. It clung to their throats, a physical manifestation of the dread that had settled deep within their chests. Moonlight, fractured by grimy panes, cast long, skeletal shadows that danced with their every tremor. Richard, ever the picture of composure, stood a few feet away, his silhouette sharp against the faint glow filtering from outside. Tammy, her knuckles white where she gripped the cold, damp concrete floor, felt a nauseous wave of disbelief wash over her. This couldn't be happening. Not to them. Not *this*.

Beside her, Eleanor trembled, her breath coming in shallow, ragged gasps. Jessica, usually buried in the glow of a screen, was a pale, rigid statue, her eyes wide and fixed on the scene unfolding before them. Marcus, however, stood with a peculiar sort of intensity, his gaze fixed on Richard, a flicker of something akin to… eagerness?… in his eyes.

The man they had been brought here to deal with, a burly, red-faced individual named Henderson, was tied to a chair. His pleas, once frantic, had devolved into a pathetic, gurgling whimper. He had been a loose end, a witness to a prior indiscretion of Richard’s, a man who had begun to make inconvenient noises about ‘justice’. Richard had explained it all with a chillingly detached calm, a carefully constructed narrative of necessity. “He knows too much,” Richard had said, his voice smooth as polished obsidian, “and he’s threatening to unravel everything. The merger, our livelihoods… our freedom.”
