The air in the penthouse suite was thick, not with the expensive perfume of success, but with the acrid scent of fear and betrayal. Richard Thorne, impeccably dressed as always, stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, his back to the three figures huddled in the opulent living area. The city lights glittered below, a million tiny promises that felt, at this moment, like a million tiny indictments. Tammy Lee, her usual sharp composure frayed, nervously twisted a diamond ring on her finger. Marcus Bellweather, his bravado a thin veneer, shifted his weight from foot to foot, his eyes darting between Richard and the door. Jessica White, a tremor running through her slender frame, clutched a tablet to her chest like a shield. Eleanor Vance was absent. Her absence was a gaping wound, a silence that screamed louder than any accusation.
"So," Richard began, his voice smooth as aged whiskey, "it seems we have a situation." He turned, his gaze sweeping over them, a predator assessing its prey. There was no surprise in his eyes, only a chillingly calm assessment. "Jessica, you appear to have… misplaced a certain hard drive."
Jessica flinched. "I… I didn't misplace it, Richard. I… I took it." Her voice was a reedy whisper, barely audible above the hum of the air conditioning.
