Jessica's Escape

Jessica manages to disappear or execute a part of her escape plan, leaving the others to deal with the fallout. Her absence creates a void and a new set of problems for Richard.

The sterile hum of the server room, usually a sanctuary for Jessica, now felt like the inside of a coffin. The cool air, once a balm to her overtaxed mind, now seemed to leach the warmth from her skin, leaving her trembling. Her fingers, usually dancing across the keyboard with an almost supernatural grace, were clumsy, fumbling with the delicate USB drive. Each click of the small device felt deafening in the silence, a violation of the carefully constructed peace Richard had so painstakingly arranged.

Peace. The word tasted like ash in her mouth. There was no peace here, only a gnawing dread that had become her constant companion. It followed her from the gilded cages of her office to the hushed luxury of her apartment, a phantom limb of fear that ached with a phantom pain. Richard had called it necessary. He’d called *it* necessary. The words, delivered with that unnerving calm that always preceded a storm, had echoed in her mind, each syllable a tiny hammer blow against the fragile walls of her sanity.

She was not built for this. Her brilliance lay in the elegant architecture of code, in the intricate dance of algorithms. It did not lie in the cold, hard calculus of human desperation, in the brutal logic of survival. Yet, here she was, on the precipice of something far beyond her comprehension, driven by a terror so profound it had finally eclipsed her fear of Richard.
