The air in Richard Thorne’s meticulously curated office, usually thick with the scent of aged leather and ambition, now carried a distinct chill, a palpable tension that had nothing to do with the arctic blast outside. Rain lashed against the panoramic windows, each droplet a tiny hammer blow against their fragile composure. Richard, ever the maestro of his own drama, stood by the window, his back to the others, a silhouette against the bruised twilight.
Tammy Lee, her usually sharp features etched with a weariness that went bone-deep, traced the rim of her untouched teacup. Eleanor Vance, her gentle hands clasped tightly in her lap, offered a silent, worried glance at Jessica White, who was practically vibrating with a silent, contained panic. Marcus Bellweather, on the other hand, paced the plush carpet with a restless energy, his usual swagger replaced by a nervous, almost aggressive stride.
“A witness,” Richard’s voice cut through the oppressive quiet, low and dangerously smooth. It wasn’t a question. It was a pronouncement, a pronouncement of doom. “Someone saw something.”
