The air in Richard Thorne’s penthouse study was thick with the scent of aged whiskey and a more recent, metallic tang that clung to the expensive Persian rug like a bad memory. Rain lashed against the floor-to-ceiling windows, each drop a tiny drumbeat against the silence that had descended after Eleanor’s departure. Richard swirled the amber liquid in his crystal tumbler, his gaze fixed on the turbulent cityscape below, a panorama of glittering lights that seemed to mock the darkness pooling within him.
Tammy sat across from him, her posture rigid, her hands clasped so tightly her knuckles were pale. Her usual sharp wit had been blunted, replaced by a raw, palpable fear. Jessica, a hunched silhouette in the corner armchair, fiddled incessantly with her smartwatch, its face a blur of rapidly changing data streams that only she could decipher. Marcus, bless his eager heart, was pacing near the fireplace, his steps heavy, a strange mix of bravado and unease radiating from him.
“Eleanor is… out of the picture,” Richard stated, his voice a low rumble, devoid of any discernible emotion. He didn’t look at Tammy, but he felt the tremor that ran through her. “A necessary adjustment. She was becoming… a liability.”
