But tonight, the hum felt like a mocking dirge. The air, usually crisp and cool, was thick with a tension that had nothing to do with the ambient temperature. Jessica, huddled in a corner, her face pale and drawn, was a study in pure, unadulterated fear. Her fingers, usually dancing across keyboards with practiced grace, were clasped so tightly her knuckles had gone white.

“He’s… he’s going to do it, isn’t he?” Jessica’s voice was a thin thread, barely audible above the relentless drone of the machines. “He’s going to get rid of me.”
