The sterile gleam of Richard Thorne’s corner office, usually a symbol of his unassailable control, felt like a gilded cage to Tammy Lee. The cityscape sprawled below, a tapestry of ambition and avarice, yet all she could see was the deepening shadow cast by their shared deeds. The air, thick with the scent of expensive leather and something subtly metallic – the lingering phantom of fear, perhaps – pressed in on her. She’d rehearsed this moment a hundred times in the echoing silence of her own mind, each iteration ending with a tremor of dread.
Richard, as always, was a picture of serene power. He leaned back in his impossibly sleek chair, a half-smile playing on his lips as he gestured for her to sit. The gesture was polite, almost casual, but Tammy felt the weight of his gaze, a predator assessing its prey. He’d built this empire, and the others, on a foundation of carefully curated lies and, more recently, blood. And she, Tammy, had benefited. She’d known, on some level, that the meteoric rise of their respective companies hadn’t been entirely organic, that certain ‘unforeseen circumstances’ had conveniently cleared paths. But knowing and being forced to participate were two vastly different oceans.
“Tammy,” Richard’s voice was smooth as polished obsidian, a sound that could charm a nation or silence a witness. “To what do I owe this unscheduled visit? Has the merger suddenly become more appealing?”
