Chapter 10
Jessica's Gambit
Driven by fear, Jessica secretly activates her contingency plan, attempting to anonymously leak information or create a digital dead end. Richard remains unaware, confident in his surveillance.
The hum of the server room was a low, constant thrum against Jessica’s eardrums, a familiar lullaby that usually soothed her frayed nerves. Tonight, however, it sounded like the frantic beating of a trapped bird’s wings. Her fingers danced across the keyboard, a blur of motion, each keystroke a prayer whispered into the digital ether. He had underestimated the desperation of a cornered tech genius.
Her contingency plan, a tangled web of anonymous proxies, encrypted drop sites, and self-destructing data packets, had been a long time in the making. Initially, it was a morbid fascination, a “what if” scenario she’d coded into existence during sleepless nights fueled by too much caffeine and the gnawing anxiety of her own precarious position. Instead, it had become a gilded guillotine, hanging over their heads, poised to sever anything that dared to stand in its way. And Silas, with his unnerving serenity, was the one holding the blade. He had painted himself as their protector, their benefactor, the one who had paved the road to their success. But Jessica knew the truth. The road was paved with bodies, with ruined lives, with the silent screams of those who had dared to cross Silas Thorne.
