Outside, the city lights, a thousand indifferent eyes, blinked on, oblivious to the knot of fear tightening in Tammy’s chest. It had been three weeks since… since the incident. Three weeks of forced smiles at board meetings, of rehearsed casualness during their weekly dinners, of a shared secret that coiled around them like a venomous snake. The merger, once a glittering prize, now felt like a gilded cage.

Richard, ever the picture of composure, swirled the amber liquid in his glass, the ice clinking with a sound that seemed unnaturally loud in the strained silence. “The auditors are due next week,” he said, his voice smooth as polished obsidian. “Standard procedure, of course. But we need to ensure everything is… pristine.”

Jessica, perched on the edge of a plush sofa, her fingers drumming a frantic, silent rhythm on her knee, flinched. “Pristine,” she echoed, her voice a thin thread of anxiety. Her eyes darted to the sleek tablet on the coffee table, a digital fortress that was both her sanctuary and her prison. “I’ve run every diagnostic imaginable. No anomalies. No… irregularities.”
