After the attack at the country house, Ella and Evan face escalating threats from Thomas. He sends a taunting message and then breaks into the estate. A violent confrontation leaves Evan injured, and Thomas escapes. As the police search, Ella resolves to confront Thomas alone to protect her husband.
The morning sun crept through the curtains, casting pale gold across the bed. Ella lay still, her eyes fixed on the window where the shadow had moved the night before. She had not slept. Every creak of the old house sent a jolt through her, every gust of wind a whisper of danger. Beside her, Evan stirred, his hand finding hers.
“You did not rest,” he murmured, his voice thick with worry.
“Neither did you.” She turned to face him, tracing the lines of fatigue on his handsome face. “I keep seeing him, Evan. Not the man we caught, but Thomas. I feel him watching.”
